Understanding Poker Performance Metrics

Tournament Analysis Explained
Our data-driven approach to evaluating tournament value

Soft Dollars

"Soft Dollars" represents the estimated value of recreational player money in a tournament. It helps skilled players identify which tournaments offer the best expected value.

What Makes Up Soft Dollars:

  • Recreational Players: Higher percentage of recreational players = more soft dollars
  • Prize Pool Size: Larger prize pools multiply the value of field softness
  • Buy-in Efficiency: Lower buy-ins relative to prize pool create better value
  • Field Size: Tournaments with optimal field sizes balance edge with variance

Field Softness

Field softness measures how "beatable" a tournament is based on the skill distribution of players. We calculate softness using Global Poker Index (GPI) data and sophisticated distribution models.

Softness Scale:

  • 0.35-0.45: Very tough field
  • 0.45-0.50: Tough field
  • 0.50-0.55: Average field
  • 0.55-0.60: Soft field
  • 0.60-0.70: Very soft field
  • 0.70+: Extremely soft field

Player Tiers:

  • Recreational: 0-200 GPI points
  • Amateur: 200-400 GPI points
  • Semi-Pro: 400-650 GPI points
  • Professional: 650-1000 GPI points
  • Elite Pro: 1000-1500 GPI points
  • World Class: 1500-2500 GPI points
  • Superstar: 2500+ GPI points

Advanced Metrics

Field Distribution:

We analyze tournament results to determine player skill distribution across tiers. For non-cashed players, we use sophisticated extrapolation models based on:

  • Series-level player distribution
  • Buy-in level characteristics
  • Tournament format tendencies
  • Historical player performance data

This gives us a complete view of the skill distribution across the entire field.

ROI Expectations:

For each player tier, we calculate expected Return on Investment by combining:

  • Field composition analysis
  • Prize pool distribution
  • Edge multipliers for different skill levels
  • Tournament structure variance

Each ROI calculation includes a confidence score based on the completeness and reliability of our data.

Data Reliability

We calculate and display confidence scores for our metrics to provide transparency. Higher confidence scores mean more reliable data and predictions.

Factors That Affect Reliability:

  • Sample Size: More cashed players = higher confidence
  • Field Coverage: Higher percentage of field with data = better reliability
  • Series Data Quality: Strong series-level metrics improve individual tournament estimates
  • Metric Consistency: Consistent patterns across tournaments increase reliability

Our Methodology

We combine data from multiple sources to create the most accurate tournament value assessments:

  • Tournament Results Data: We analyze historical placement data from thousands of tournaments to identify player skill levels.
  • Global Poker Index: We incorporate GPI data to evaluate player skill and tournament difficulty.
  • Series Analysis: We identify patterns across tournament series to model player distribution for similar events.
  • Buy-in Tier Analysis: We segment tournaments by buy-in level to detect patterns specific to different stakes.

Our goal is to provide poker players with actionable insights that help optimize tournament selection and maximize expected value.
